Gjertsen is currently in his 15th year as a Head Coach at Swim Atlanta.  He has helped over ninety-five athletes continue their swimming careers in Division I, II and III schools.  During his tenure at Swim Atlanta he has coached several athletes to top eight finishes at the US Nationals and had several Olympic Trial qualifiers.  In the summer of 2004 he coached the US National “rookie of the meet”.   Gjertsen’s swimmers have gone on to become Conference Champions, NCAA qualifiers and NCAA Champions. 

 

A former Texas Longhorn swimmer, he was three-time NCAA individual Champion and an ten-time NCAA relay Champion.   Gjertsen was a member of the Texas Longhorn NCAA Team Champions 1988,1989 and 1990.  Gjertsen was elected tri-captain his senior year.  Gjertsen was a two-time Olympic Gold medallist in 1988

( Seoul, Korea ) Olympic Bronze medallist in 1992 ( Barcelona, Spain ).   Gjertsen was also a one-time World Record holder as a member of the United States 4 x 200 freestyle relay.

 

Doug has been married fifteen years to the former Sandra Scoggins.  Doug and Sandy have three children, two girls Alaina, Alyssa and a boy Avery.  They reside in McDonough, Georgia a suburb of Atlanta.
